About
Yasmin Stephens is a UK based photographic artist working with conceptual photography, moving image and research areas of identity, culture and social change both in the West and the Middle East. WIthin the act of photographing Yasmin Stephens uses play and performance within the photo to convey the concept behind the work.
Yasmin Stephens has a MFA in Photography from the University for the Creative Arts. Her first body of work ‘To Know the Unknown’ engages with her own search for cultural identity. The work looks at her reality, being brought up in the UK and the ongoing fantasy of her Iraqi heritage.
Yasmin Stephens often acts as both the photographer and the subject within her work, using performative motion to engage and respond to the theoretical constructs behind the work. Her recent work ‘Homeostasis’ draws on theories of the gaze, social objectification and female empowerment. Homeostasis consists of a series of self portraits documenting a process of physical female empowerment, gaining ownership of the body using movement and natural environments.
Theoretical research is a key part of Yasmin's practice, looking at the relationship between the West and Middle East in relation to Female Empowerment through Art. This is an ongoing area of study which Yasmin Stephens shares via seminars and visiting lectures.
